This charitable foundation dedicated to fighting premature birth and its complications is the legacy she left behind.
Since the charity’s inception in April 2006, your generosity has helped us accomplish a lot.
| • |
We’ve raised more than $165,000 in the fight against prematurity.
|
| • |
We donated $50,000 to fund medical research at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles into the devastating intenstinal condition called NEC that took Caitlin’s life and the lives of so many other premature babies. |
| • |
We are now working directly with Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU’s) to fund better medical care for premature babies and assist parents caring for their children. |
| • |
We created a brand new Board of Directors who will help oversee the foundation’s growth. A big “Thank You” to all of them: Karl Hagberg, Alleah Pointkouski, Mike LeFante, Jamie Munjack, John McHugh, Tim Perskie, Mike Gerbounka, Rich Gerbounka, Dorothy Gerbounka, Jim Russell and Joan Russell. |
Unfortunately, our efforts have coincided with a steady increase in the number of premature births in the United States. Today, more than 530,000 babies each year are born too soon in our country – a 20% increase since 1990 that costs the nation more than $26 billion a year in healthcare costs.
Even worse, premature birth is the leading cause of death for newborns, while babies who survive face the risk of serious lifelong health problems including learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, blindness, hearing loss, and other chronic conditions including asthma.
And as we found out – it can happen to anyone, anytime, often without warning. It’s a traumatic experience that no baby and no family should ever have to experience, but for those who do, our foundation is doing our best to help.
We are grateful beyond words for your support of Caitlin’s foundation and its mission. Please continue to spread the word to your family, friends and co-workers – especially those affected by premature birth. If you have been affected, feel free to contact us any time at caitlinscharity@optonline.net or
732 276-5816.
We look forward to your continued support in 2009 and will do our best to keep you informed on how we’re doing.
Sincerely,
Caitlin’s Mom and Dad
